The following information is intended as procedural reference only and may or may not match the requirements of your vehicle. Use at your own risk and always observe proper safety precautions.
Below are scanned images from the MazdaSpeed RX-8 body kit install instructions. Unfortunately (for non-japanese readers) they aren't translated. Yet. Until then this page serves as a place holder for what I currently have. Please save the PDFs to your local computer in order to minimize my bandwidth useage. If you have a set of english instructions I'd love to scan them to make new PDFs. Please email
me. Enjoy.

MazdaSpeed Side Skirts
Instructions are fairly straightforward and easy to follow. You drill four holes in the side of the car and four underneath. If you break any of the fasteners you can order replacements from Mazda. The MazdaSpeed (single) side sill hardware kit is PN# QSE170903.
- Tip #1, removing rub strip under car: The rub strip is held on with several fasteners. The fasteners have "ears" that secure them in place. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the ear off, inserting the screwdriver at right angles to the car body.
- Tip #2, removing a part just in front of rub strips: At one point the instructions say to remove a fastener used to secure the second screw on the rub strip. I'm not sure why since I had to replace it at the end. Ignore this step and leave it alone.
- Tip #3, attaching white plastic fastners to side skirts: These parts hook on to the side skirt first and are then pressed into the holes you drilled previously. Do not attach them to the car first like I did on the first pass. You'll have to pry them out which can be difficult.
- Tip #4, white plastic fastners: Four are used on each side. Three have larger gaps to fit onto the side skirt. One has a smaller gap to fit onto the metal insert attached to the side skirt in the rear.
- Tip #5, removing adhesive tape: Before attaching the side skirt for the last time, peel 1" from each adhesive tape backing and wrap a 4" length of masking tape around it. The tape's "tail" should point up. After everything's lined up on the car it's easy to pull the "tail" to remove the adhesive backing.
MazdaSpeed Rear Wing
I installed an MS wing (mostly) following the OEM install instructions. To briefly review they are as follows:
- Step 1. Use drill templates to drill two 8mm holes on either side of trunk.
- Step 2. Loosely attach angle brackets to trunk.
- Step 3. Loosely attach trunk lip over angle brackets.
- Step 4. Loosely attach wing to angle brackets.
- Step 5. Make sure everything is aligned correctly and fasten securely.
Observations
- 1. The trunk bolts are smaller than 8mm. That's to give you extra adjustment room. The template may be off so feel free to drill a bigger (10mm) hole.
- 2. The instructions are unclear regarding attachment of the sponge rubber under the angle brackets. I suggest the sticky side goes up and adheres to the angle bracket.
- 3. The drilled holes may not line up properly even with careful use of the template. Because of this I suggest the following installation procedure:
My suggestions regarding installation
- Step 1. Attach sponge rubber to bottom of angle brackets.
- Step 2. Attach angle brackets to trunk lip (1 bolt for bracket) finger-tight.
- Step 3. Attach wing to angle brackets finger-tight.
- Step 4. Place entire assembly on trunk and align.
- Step 5. Have someone apply downward pressure on wing to keep brackets in place while doing steps 6-7.
- Step 6. Unbolt angle brackets from trunk lip.
- Step 7. Raise trunk lip and mark holes where you're supposed to drill through trunk.
- Step 8. Remove wing assembly, drill trunk, seal exposed metal.
- Step 9. Bolt angle brackets to trunk.
- Step 10. Lift trunk lip up (remember it's still hanging loose between angle brackets and wing) and remove adhesive backing. Press down to secure on to trunk.
- Step 11. Bolt trunk lip to angle brackets.
- Step 12. Tighten all bolts to recommended torque. Oh, one minor note: the wing is commonly seen at a 0 degree angle. There are several other settings. Putting it in the second highest notch means the wing obscures the middle quarter of your view in the rearview mirror. As STi owners know, this is the most important portion when it comes to identifying rapidly approaching cops.
